Big Trouble In Little China/Escape From New York Pits East Coast Comic Shops Against West Coast

Ahead of San Diego Comic Con, Boom Studios announced their first crossover between two licenses Big Trouble In Little China and Escape From New York.

Written by Greg Pak with art by Russ Manning nominee Daniel Bayliss and variant covers by Bayliss, Michael Allred, Michael Cho, and Oliver Barrett, its the crossover pits one cult movie from the 1980s against the other, both of which starred Kurt Russell and were directed by John Carpenter.

There are plenty of differences. One of the most obvious is that Jack Burton's story takes place on the West Coast in San Francisco and Snake Plissken's tale on the East Coast in New York. So not only is the comic a symbolic showdown between right and left coasts, but Boom has taken it a step further by pitting East Coast retailers versus West Coast retailers.

Boom is offering an East Coast variant cover and a West Coast variant, both by Michael Cho & Andy Belanger. Each cover features both Jack and Snake, but highlights their respective hero front and center in their native setting.

Retailers east of the Mississippi River (and international accounts) need to order 10 or more copies of the main cover and the subscription cover combined to unlock the East Coast variant after which they can order as many as they want. If they order 25 copies or more of the East Coast variant, they also unlock the West Coast variant cover which they can order in any quantity they like. The opposite is true for retailers west of the Mississippi River.

From what I understand, East Coast retailers are currently leading the West Coast retailers by 22%. Big Trouble In Little China/Escape From New York #1 is FOCing today. Will West Coast retailers jump ahead and out order their East Coast brethren? Or will the East reign supreme?

Either way comic fans should win.
