"You Always Have To Look To See Who Is Talking" And Other Comments About The New Harry Potter 'Book', The Cursed Child

911Xmhn9+rLHarry Potter And The Cursed Child is a play written by Jack Thorne, creator of The Fades, writer on Skins and Shameless, This Is England and the upcoming adaptation of His Dark Materials.

It is based on a story idea he had with JK Rowling and John Tiffany. Launched in London it is expected to run for years and years. The publicity behind it was insane.

Except in some place, it seems, as the script to the play was released yesterday on Kindle and in print at midnight, yesterday.

And some people on Amazon's reviews have seemed very surprised to find that the play… is a play.

Kimmy: This was the most wait of money I've ever spent! I couldn't read past 10 minutes. I was missed guided about the book I thought it was just saying they were making play NOT that you would be reading a script. You have to always look to see who it is that's talking you have to follow along with what the stage looks like

Sheila DeYoung: Very disappointed that I didn't research more… Not a book but a script instead… So DISAPPOINTED! '

Mark Omundsen:  If I wanted to see a play I'd go to the theatre. Don't waste your money.

Andrew: Written like a play? I was excited to get this book and I had no idea. This is by far the worst thing I've ever read,

ReaderGirl: No flow, no chemistry, no feel, just words…just does not blend right…something seems off, oh wait, it's a script, not a nice flowing novel..no wonder

AmazonCustomer: Was a quick read, nothing like the original 7 books…it's a play..not a novel…huge let down for me…:(

Deborah E Basel: I purposefully didn't read anything about the new book because I wanted it to be fresh and a surprise. A play??? Definitely not in the spirit of the original series. So disappointed.

Mallen: . It is a play–a script–and so it is choppy, with one character speaking and then the next. I wish I hadn't wasted my money

Fail: The play style messed the whole thing up, not a good read. Wish I could get my money back.

Topher: he idea that this is a proper book is misleading at best, and an outright lie at worst. It's a play-by-play of a play meant to be performed on stage.

Also that it wasn't actually written by JK Rowling.

SRob: Had I known JK didn't write every word of this herself, I never would have read it.

J Buke: Not JK Rowling at all. She has a style all her own. It's a play written by someone else based on an idea that JK had.

Michael Fritz: Well to start I don't know how the hell Rowling let this thing get made into a play or why she had someone else right it when she should be writing every single chronicle in the Wizarding World Canon, and it's because of this that many people probably don't consider this canon.

Steve: As everyone here has already said, this book…err "script" wasn't written by JK Rowling

Caro: But guess what, Rowling (or whoever wrote this) decides (probably knowing that there was no true tension for a story in the future) to go back in time

Or sometimes both at the same time.

lmarck: This is not a book written by JK Rowling. It is a script that she approved. Not a book a script.

Even given all this, reviews are… mixed. But it does seem surprising how few people knew what they were getting when they handed over their cash.
