Brandon Sanderson's White Sand Lands #2 On The NY Times GN Bestseller List

As part of their pre-SDCC announcements, Dynamite has sent out a press release telling us that the new graphic novel White Sand sold out in less than a week. This is an original graphic novel based on an unpublished manuscript by author Brandon Sanderson. It's part of his Cosmere Universe and was adapted by Rik Hoskin with art by Julius Gopez. You don't hear a lot about graphic novels selling out.

It's also #2 on the New York Times Graphic Novel Bestseller List.

Now, they included some of the numbers for the sell out. They printed 150% more books than were pre-ordered and sold through those in less than a week. That's pretty damn impressive. They have backorders for an additional 50% of the original orders… so they're going back to press with the book.

Why is this book doing well? Turns out Brandon Sanderson is pretty popular. He wrote the three concluding Wheel of Time books after Robert Jordan's passing. He then launched his own series of Cosmere novels including Elantris (2005), Mistborn: The Final Empire (2006), Warbreaker (2009), and The Way of Kings (2010). In addition to Cosmere, he has published the AlcatrazInfinity BladeLegionReckoners, and Rithmatist series. So he's pretty prolific.

I recently read Mistborn: The Final Empire and liked it a lot. I have a copy of White Sand sitting on my desk to read this weekend. I also got to meet Sanderson last month at the Phoenix Comic Con where he drew large crowds for his panel and signings. He was also very nice.

But another sign of how popular his stuff is, someone has created a board game based on the Mistborn book and put it on kickstarter. They had an initial goal of $30,000… with 5 days to go they're at just over $200,000.

Dynamite has definitely tapped into the right author here.

But this is the first graphic novel in a set, so if this sounds interesting to you… check your local shops or Amazon to see if they have a copy.

From the back cover description: On the planet of Taldain, the legendary Sand Masters harness arcane powers to manipulate sand in spectacular ways. But when they are slaughtered in a sinister conspiracy, the weakest of their number, Kenton, believes himself to be the only survivor. With enemies closing in on all sides, Kenton forges an unlikely partnership with Khriss — a mysterious Darksider who hides secrets of her own.
