Christian Ward is the artist on genderfluid comic series Ody-C written by Matt Fraction from Image Comics, and tonight he can be found alongside cosplayer and commentator Rosie Fletcher at Gosh Comics in Soho, London from 7-9pm as part of the store's regular Let's Talk Intersectionality: Feminism and Comics slots.
With a Body Positivity and Cosplay. Christian Ward will be talking Body Positivity in Comics and Rosie Fletcher will focus on Cosplay.
Let's Talk Intersectionality is a reading and discussion group that explores feminist texts and issues from an intersectional perspective. They will have some brief presentations and provocations about intersectional issues in comics and will then break up into small groups to chat.
Why the specific focus? Last year, the group found that a lot of the questions that came up were around the portrayal of different genders (women, men, trans people, nonbinary people, etc) in mainstream comics, because of this they've decided to add a new feature to the event. They will host special guests from the industry, individuals that can help answer questions and add an insider perspective to the topics. From in their discussions at our last event we decided to focus the discussion topics on body positivity in comics and the cosplay world.
Fletcher is a journalist and commentator, writing on disability and welfare, feminism and pop culture, socialism and the Labour Party – and cosplaying characters like Squirrel Girl and Kimmy Schmidt.
While Ward's series ODY-C is one that the group sites often for its portrayal of the female body, sexuality, and gender fluidity with a story that throws female stereotypes out the window.
The event is co-hosted by Lauren Murphy and Lisa Woynarski. Attendance is free but registration is encouraged, here.No prior knowledge of comics necessary, and all welcome. Though they do recommend reading the following to help spur discussion.
