Whom Is The DC's Writers Workshop Really For?

New_DC_logoDC Comics has opened up applications for their Writers Workshop. This is an opportunity for people wanting to write comics to learn from professionals, and possible get a chance at work with the publisher.

The idea is that there is a screening process using an application set up. Then an undisclosed number will be accepted into the Writer Room, which is a 13-week video workshop where you learn the craft from a 'master writer'. They don't say who the writer is or if it's only one writer.

From the Writer Room, a hand-selected group will be invited to Burbank for the ultimate writing experience. Again, no real definition of how many will be chosen or what the experience is. And by saying 'invited to Burbank' could mean you have to pay your own way and accommodations.

And, the most important part, those who succeed in the master classes may obtain a position on a DC comic book series.

The terms used above are specific and the bottom line is it doesn't guarantee anything. But, for a lot of writers it is the best opportunity to get your foot in the door at DC. Even if it is geared towards already established writers and not newcomers.

I say that because of the application process. They want a resume that shows all your published work, a short composition about why you want to work at DC and what your experience brings. They also ask for published writing samples and your on-line presence. You can also include a letter of recommendation from someone in the industry.

To use a sports metaphor, this is less of a tryout and more of the Senior Bowl. They appear to be looking for writers who have already gotten into the industry far enough that they have a proven body of work, but haven't had the opportunity to get in with the Big Two. For those people, this is a huge opportunity.

It will be interesting to see who comes out of this workshop with a writing gig.

You can apply for the Writers Workshop here.
