Xbox Look Like They Are Trying To Set Up Crossplay With PC And PS4

The dream of playing across consoles has been one long held by gamers who have ever had a friend who prefers a different platform than them.

Well, it seems Microsoft are making pretty big strides towards that very idea. Speaking on Xbox's site, ID@XBOX's Chris Charla said that Microsoft is trying to create a world where all platforms speak to each other. Under the title 'Cross-Network Play' he said:

First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

Of course, it's up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players.

While it is a nice idea, this could just have been something Microsoft said to score points, without acting on. However, it seems that the wheels are in motion already. Rocket League will be the first title to utilise Windows and Xbox crossplay and there is currently "an open invitation for other networks to participate as well."

This essentially appears to put the ball in Sony's court, and I for one hope they take it. It would be a huge step for the gaming industry, making sure audiences weren't walled off from one another. This follows a lot of pretty out there proposals from Microsoft of late, who are clearly trying to change their business model in the games division. It's pretty fascinating to watch happen, and this could be the biggest one yet…if all comes together..
