A Kickstarter From The Heart: Silicon Hearts

By Olly MacNamee

silicon heart1After just one week live, this Kickstarter for Sam Road and Kat Nicholson's Silicon Heart campaign is going great guns and already garnering a great deal of support from backers who have clearly heard of this great little title, recently launched at The Birmingham Comics Festival, and want to help continue the story towards its conclusion. But a little bit of an extra push won't hurt either, I imagine, as the two co-creators of this post-modern love story seek to publish their remaining three issues on a quarterly basis and get their story out there.

silicon heart 2With their first full colour issue recently published (and you can read my review here) Sam and Kat are hoping to raise the required funds needed for the continuation and completion of their unconventional love story that revolves around two adolescent outsiders, January and her artificial human neighbour, Rho, all set against a quiet, everyday, albeit futuristic, Welsh community that seems on the surface to be a future not too dissimilar to our present, but with more technological advancements.

On closer inspection, however, there is the faint whiff of a more sinister plan afoot, particularly for the young. The first issue alone leaves the reader with many unanswered questions that only the remaining issues of this mini-series can possibly answer. It is an enjoyable read, as we witness the blossoming romance of two young lovebirds in issue no.1, but darkened around the edges by the strong undertones of a controlling, dictatorial government established as background noise. There is clearly more to this Romeo and Juliet romance than meets the eye.

But, don't take my word for it. Grab a copy of Silicon Hearts No. 1 and read it for yourself. And, of course, if you do like it, then there are a number of incentives to pledge to this campaign, from a mere £5 pledge that will deliver you a pdf copy of issue 2 and a thank you credit too, to the more ostentatious £200 pledge that will gain you an executive producer credit (there are only 5 of these up for grabs) as well as all four issues as downloads, on top of shrink-wrapped copies of all four issues.

Silicon Hearts is an independent comic, by independent voices, offering an alternative voice to the modern comic book world. Check it out here and catch it before it's gone.
