Plunder #2 Triumphs In Action, Suspense, And Disgusting Art

Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 11.19.48 PMWhen I reviewed the first issue of Plunder, from Archaia, written by, Swifty Lang with art by Skuds McKinley, last month, I walked away from it with a lot of thoughts in my head. I wondered if my hesitation towards the story was based off of content related issues, or if it just wasn't my type of comic. There were certain things I enjoyed, and other things that I didn't, but I respected the book enough to know that I would definitely read the next issue. I wasn't satisfied enough after reading only one. Now, having read Plunder #2, I can faithfully say that I have a clearer grasp on my opinion of the book.

For those of you who don't know, Plunder follows a gang of Somali pirates who find themselves trapped in the middle of a massacre, with their only hope being a 14-year old boy who can translate for them. The 14-year old, Badoon, also narrates the story and provides us with an intense inner dialogue about how he is feeling as he adjusts to the traumatic event that he is a part of. The second issue begins with Badoon preparing himself to tell the crew about what he saw below deck, even though he knows how ridiculous it is going to sound. The crew doesn't believe him, and sends him off to complete a task for them knowing how dangerous it is. However, secondary character Stain volunteers to go with him with the knowledge that losing their translator wouldn't be beneficial. From there, the plot moves forward revealing secrets about the ship, some pretty gruesome scenes, and a discovery that changes everything.

Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 11.19.36 PMWhile the first issue felt a little bit like an information dump, it really gets a lot of foundation out of the way. Therefore, the second issue is filled with exciting, horrific, suspenseful events that aren't clouded by the worry of remembering details. We know the crew at this point, and can really dive in to what is happening. Swifty Lang's script flows well, and Skuds McKinley's art continues to be disgusting! I mean that in the nicest way possible. He truly knows how to draw a terrifying scene. Overall, I feel further invested in the series and look forward to seeing what happens next. Be sure to pick up Plunder #2 this week!
