November Sees $4.99 Amazing Spider-Man Take The Top Slot But Image Comics Maintain Marketshare, Even Without Loot Crate

It's time for another look at the cold hard statistics of the North American direct market for comic stores, as supplied by Diamond Comic Distributors.

For October, DC Comics took  27.53% of dollars spent and 31% of comics sold, a nine point drop for both on the September sweeps month Futures End titles. And this month? Not the usual attrition for DC Comics, they have maintained their position with 27.47% of dollars spent and 31.64% of comics sold. If they'd have kept Batman at $4.99, they would have been ahead on dollar share I am sure.

Marvel managed 34.82% of dollars spent and 36.35% of comics sold last time, a two point jump for both. This month, they have 34.88% of dollars spent and 37.82% of comics sold, a point and a half jump for that. Though it is also significant that DC Comics published a significant number more titles than Marvel, all in.

But it's pretty much of a muchness. What is interesting is that  Image Comics, who last month took 12.28% of comics sold and 9.77% of dollars spent, a significant 2 to 4 point jump based largely on a Walking Dead issue appearing in last month's Loot Crate, now have 10.62% and 11.06% share respectively. Their unit share is up on two months ago, but their dollar shars has taken a massive jump. Indeed, for both, Image Comics now brings in more comics sold and money spent in the direct market that Dark Horse, IDW and Boom! combined. The new Walking Dead TV series may have helped as Image continues to dominate the collection market with four titles in the top ten- but only one is Walking Dead!

Marvel does return to dominating the top ten with a Spider-Versed Amazing Spider-Man and an All-New Captain America both beating out DC's traditional bestseller, Batman and Marvel taking eight of the top ten slots – though two issues of Axis did help.

And even though November was a four week month to October's five weeks, November did significantly worse than dropping a fifth of sales, over 27% drop in sales and over 22% drop in dollars. However, it beat last year's four week November by 5% and year to date, the softening of 2014 seems to have been curtailed with dollars and sales up year on year for the marketplace…
