Mignola Variant Cover For Rocket Raccoon #1 Cancelled – Because He Never Agreed To Do It
Oh what a shame…
They've only just solicited the new Skottie Young-written Rocket Raccoon comic. And one of the retailer incentives was the Mike Mignola cover, a creator associated with the character since his mini-series with Bill Mantlo in the eighties. Retailers would get one for every fifty of the normal copies they ordered of the first issue.
But no sooner the solicitation been released than we discover that Mike Mignola is no longer doing that cover. I asked Mike what was up and he told me,
I was never contacted by Marvel about doing this cover. The artist asked if I'd do a cover and I said no. Pretty surprised that Marvel would announce a cover without someone from editorial contacting me–Not to mention that I never told anyone I would do it.
I checked in with Marvel's Senior VP Talent, CB Cebulski, who told me,
This misinformation was due to a miscommunicatio
n on our end here at Marvel. We got excited and a little ahead of ourselves when Skottie reached out to Mike in hopes of him possibly contributing a variant cover to Rocket Raccoon. We offer our sincere apologies to Mike and his fans for us simply dropping the ball here and mistakenly including his name in any solicitiation materials. We're all huge fans of his work and meant no disrespect..
It's not like Marvel are alone in such activity. I remember when DC Comics used to solicit books with Marvel-exclusive creators…
But to make up for it, here's a Mike Mignola variant from a previous comic.
