Marvel Increases Market Dominance In January 2013

MARVEL COMICS 33.40%
DC COMICS 29.69%
MARVEL COMICS 36.12%
DC COMICS 34.84%

Without a new Walking Dead graphic novel in January, Marvel and DC both clawed back comic book marketshare from Image, though both stayed in comparative positions. Marvel’s share of dollars rose from 33.4% to 34.82%, while DC’s rose from 28.69% to 31.61%. And of actual sales, Marvel rose from a 36.12% share to 40.23% and DC rose from 34.84% to 35.41%. Marvel probably did better over all. But Image’s marketshare didn’t fall back that much, the difference came from the rest of the industry.

It’s also worth noting that the comic marketshare doesn’t include Dark Horse’s success with Hyrule Historia which, at ten times the price of a comic still sold more than any other comic…

Marvel dominated the Top Ten with Superior Spider-Man #1 predictably taking the top spot, but also had issue 2 in at number 5. DC managed to place Justice League, Batman and Detective Comics in the top, while Marvel filled the rest with Marvel Now titles – Avengers seems to be the real success story there as well.
