Cammy's Covers – From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Morbius: The Living Vampire

Batman Incorporated #6 (Variant) by Juan Jose Ryp & Nathan Fairbairn

It's no secret that I love Ryp's elaborately detailed artwork. Reading Black Summer for the first time just completely blew me away, and I've been following his work ever since (checkout Clone from Image). Doing a variant cover for a Batman book certainly is a titillating endeavor, and I immediately want him working on a Bat book. Think of the potential! The Man-Bats and their veiny wings, the cloth on the two individuals front and center; this cover is so enjoyable to take in. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go start that petition.

Punk Rock Jesus #6 by Sean Murphy

But Jesus, you're doing it wrong! Go home Jesus, you're drunk! All kidding aside, what an awesome cover to end this epic miniseries with. Our Father, who art a punk, Oi Oi Oi be thy name. Just the combination of a crucifixion on an upside-down crucifix is a great concept, and it's beautifully executed by Murphy in this cover. This is definitely my favorite cover of the series, and hopefully will become the cover for the trade as well. Such fantastic imagery!

Morbius: The Living Vampire #1 by Gabriele Dell'Otto

Y'all know me; I'm a sucker for painted covers. I think it's because I can imagine one day striking it rich, and buying the original painting and framing it on my imaginary wall. Dell'Otto definitely has a knack for paints, as can be seen here with Exhibit A. I never cared for Morbius in the comics, but seeing this interpretation of him coming out of the darkness definitely gave me the chills. I'm a Ginger, but even I'm not that white! The claws, the teeth, the red eyes; all deliciously terrifying, and makes this comic that much more intriguing.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow – Wonderland #3 by David Mack

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down! I was such a fan of the second cover, that I eagerly awaited what Mack had in store for the next issue, and was not disappointed. While last time I talked about how awesome it must be for Alyson Hannigan to remain forever young in the comics, this cover brings to mind a different thought of being forever immortalized in comics; how does one feel seeing their naked body illustrated on a cover? Mack's interpretation of Hannigan's is gorgeous here, but would she agree? What modifications would she make if any? "Yup, you got the legs right, and maybe be a little more gracious with chesticles?" Bottom-line, I'm in awe of its beauty, and want it hanging on my wall in a frame. Everything from the colors to the soft line work is just perfectly planned.

The Fury of Firestorm the Nuclear Man #15 by Dan Jurgens & Ray McCarthy

Danger! Danger! High voltage! When we touch, when we kiss. While there's no kissing going on between these two, sparks definitely are flying. What I'm instantly drawn to isn't the skeletal remains of Firestorm, but rather the majestic blue electricity and excessive Kirby krackle. My eyes wander the lightning like a maze, constantly exploring every possible path. Naturally, they all end up at the same place, his fried remains, but I honestly forget he's there. Everything surrounding him is just so hypnotic, that I almost forget what title I'm picking up. Great stuff, Jurgens & Company.
