Danny Strong – Formerly Jonathan On Buffy – Tapped To Script Final Hunger Games MoviesThe last instalment of the Hunger Games trilogy, Mockingjay, is being adapted into two films. Of course it is. That's the rule with these things. The last book always has to be broken into two.

As just reported by Variety, Danny Strong has been recruited to write the screenplays. Strong has twice won Emmys for his screenwriting, for the "based on a true story" political dramas Recount and Game Change. He's also one of the writers on Lee Daniels' upcoming White House drama The Butler.

But many still remember Strong as Jonathan Levinson on Buffy. I like to think of him as both things. He was superb in both cases, in both ways.

Mockingjay is perhaps the most overtly political of the three Hunger Games books, and that's quite a feat. A lot of the plot revolves around the machinations of freedom fighters, both in the battle field and through propaganda. I think Strong has shown an interest, and facility with, these kinds of dramatic situations already. That they're going full sci-fi is probably not going to throw him off his beat one jot.

Strong has also taken a pass at a screenplay for The Last Symbol, the last of Dan Brown's Robert Langdon novels. That film had Mark Romanek attached to direct, so it seems reasonable the two have some kind of relationship. That's all it's going to take for me to cross my fingers and start hoping Romanek gets handed the Mockingjay megaphone. He'd really knock it one, I'm sure.

Yes. That would be an outstanding choice. For now, they've got Strong behind the typewriter. Good start.

For the word "variety" up in the main body of the story
