Two New Guillermo Del Toro Projects Coming To TV

Guillermo del Toro may be poised on the end of the development diving board waiting for ABC to finally give his live-action Hulk TV show the go-ahead, but that doesn’t mean he’s just sitting around. The producer-writer-director has just been linked to two more TV projects, the first of which will see a series of his novels brought the life for the small screen, and the second of which will have him directing television for the first time since Hora Marcada.

The first of these projects is an adaptation of del Toro’s vampire trilogy that began with 2009’s The Strain. The show is in final negotiations to shoot its pilot for FX, and is currently being envisioned as a kind of anti-Twilight: a return to the days when vampires used to make people dash for a stake instead of dashing for the cupboard to put on their best frock. Lost producer Carlton Cuse, who is being brought onboard as showrunner, had this to say about the show’s monsters.

These are very scary vampires. These are not romantic vampires. They will give you nightmares.

If all goes to plan, filming for The Strain will begin in Toronto this time next year. According to Variety, the vampire horror show is the first project that FX has ever ordered a pilot for based solely on the pitch, and the channel had to fight off strong contenders Cinemax and Starz, who were also bidding for it. If they’re excited for it, then I’m excited for it.

Second on del Toro’s “to do” list is an American reboot of Miss Marple.

Just kidding … sort of. The Nutshell Studies is artist Corinne May Botz‘s pitch for a show about a 1950s small-town housewife who decides to shun her place in the kitchen for a hobby of solving brutal murders. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show is being developed by HBO and is based on the life of pioneer criminologist and forensic scientist Frances Glessner Lee. Del Toro will be onboard as executive producer and director, his manager Gary Unger also holding an executive producer role, and detective novelist Sara Gran serving as writer for the series.
