On the left is the Eaglemoss lead figure of Siryn, part of their Classic Marvel Figurine Collection partwork line. On the right is a DeviantArt sketch by Kawika. Is the pose a total coincidence? Well, it could have been except the sculptor went and showed us his working out… with a new pencil sketch used as reference that seems very familiar…

The original artist, Kawika, is not happy.

Part of me is flattered. A bigger part of me is disappointed that a company that employs artists isn't more careful, considerate, and ethical. The ebay details asserts that each figurine is based on an original piece of Marvel artwork.

I've moved past fan art for the most part and have no interest in pursuing any "justice"…assuming I'm entitled to any. It was a great way for me to get back into drawing after being away for so long. Now, I'm focusing on work that is more personal to me and conceived from within. Things are looking up, as I'm preparing for a show. I'll be featured in a showcase just off the Las Vegas strip this coming October.

However, this does raise concerns about posting my work online. I'm very dubious about using dA anymore. If I'm going to showcase work of a deeply personal nature, do I want to run the risk that these works will be stolen and plagiarized? That would really hurt me.

Maybe I'm feeling excessively vulnerable.

Maybe… I'm sure Eaglemoss will be in touch though.

In Swipe File we present two or more images that resemble each other to some degree. They may be homages, parodies, ironic appropriations, coincidences or works of the lightbox. We trust you, the reader, to make that judgment yourself? If you are unable to do so, please return your eyes to their maker before any further damage is done. The Swipe File doesn't judge, it's interested more in the process of creation, how work influences other work, how new work comes from old, and sometimes how the same ideas emerge simultaneously, as if their time has just come. The Swipe File was named after the advertising industry habit where writers and artist collect images and lines they admire to inspire them in their work. It was swiped from the Comic Journal who originally ran this column, as well as the now defunct Swipe Of The Week website.
