Both Marvel And DC Gained Marketshare In August 2012
In August DC again beat Marvel on marketshare by dollar but this month, rarely Marvel clawed back the volume share. Marvel traditionally have better five week months like August, as they produce comics to fill the extra week while DC are less likely to.
Both company's marketshare in both categories increased in August however, thanks mostly to there not being a Walking Dead #100 in the month. DC's dollar marketshare moved from July's 32.71% to 33.32% while Marvel's moved from 31.96% to 32.42%. On volume marketshare, Marvel rose from 35.45% to 37.18% while DC's moved from 36.55% to 37.12%.
The traditional shape of the top ten chart, with Avengers Vs X-Men taking the top two slots and DC's books taking the rest, was interrupted by Amazing Spider-Man's 50th Anniversary edition. And two more Before Watchmen comics also made their way into the top ten.
Batman Earth One also made it to the top of the graphic novel charts for two months in a row, which was reflected in all the post-publication reorders that Bleeding Cool has reported through the last couple of months.
As for the comics market as a whole, last August was also a five week month, so the statistics are comparable, and we're seeing a 15% increase on volume and a 20$ increase in dollars taken. Next month, taking into account the first month of the New 52 may be revelatory…
