The Glasgow League of Writers Do Kapow!

This year's Kapow Comic Con saw Jonathan Ross team up with some masked wrestlers to take on evil destroyers of comic books (his own, to be precise), DC promising to 'out' one of their characters and Being Human's Russel Tovey's revelation that he's coming ever-closer to writing a "rent boys in space" script.

In its second year Kapow proved to be a smoother, better affair. Last year saw the larger queues 'choking' parts of the con and making them a nightmare to navigate – this year Con's had nothing less than an SAS trainer in charge of the queuing system and it worked like a dream, keeping the main areas open and safe to roam.

In this more relaxed environment pros, fans and celebs easily mixed. Scott Snyder was one of numerous creators who went above and beyond the call of duty, signing what looked like to be a warehouse's worth of comics and still making time to chat with fans. John McCrea had some of the pages from his new Mars Attack project on display at his stall while both him and his son (who said he's going to become a comic artist just like his dad) sketched the day away. An under-the-weather Peter Serafinowicz still had a smile for everyone who asked him for a photo while he walked among the stalls.

Speaking of the stalls, there seemed to be a larger number of indie and small press tables this year, offering  reassuringly high quality titles and some impressively left-field items. How does an edible comic grab you? Printed on rice paper, they proved to be a tasty treat ("Hmmm… panels," as Homer Simpson would probably say) and their floss borders were a nice touch. Then there was Sioux Warrior (www.capefearcomics.com), a musical comic that, when opened, would play the soundtrack as you read along. Proof that in between the cross-overs and ret-cons there are still people out there in the industry trying to do something different.

GLoW's own stall was a buzz of activity and we almost always had at least one visitor we could try and sweet talk/harass/threaten into buying one of our comics. Hangovers and lack of sleep led to some of us spending a chunk of Sunday trying to lure people to the table with a siren's song but even that couldn't stop the great business we did.

Low points? Movie X being revealed as Iron Sky deflated many and saw some walk out. There was a lack of star power compared to last year's, which saw the casts of Thor, Misfits and Merlin come through its doors. Then there was the scandalously high prices at the Hilton's bar, but I'm sure Kieron Gillen will tell you all about that…
