DC Dominates January Backlist Charts
It's a whole different world of comic distribution statistics. We've been so blinded to the monthly marketshare battles that we've forgotten that there other fights being fought. And a very different looking world indeed, even within the boundaries of Diamond Comic Distributors. Such as… the backlist. Comics made available after their initial sale date on a longer basis than their original offering.
Take a look at the top ten backlist ordered comics in January. Marvel's Kick Ass 2 #3 hits the top, followed by the Kevin Smith Bionic Man from Dynamite, and Billy Tucci's advent comic, A Child Is Born. With books from Oni, IDW, Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, Archie and Dark Horse joining them.
As for the trade paperbacks, Image dominates with The Walking Dead with DC bringing up the rear with Fables and Batman.
Overall however, DC dominates with a 30% share, with Marvel just under 20% and Image not far behind. Basically there's a lot on books on this list but its the mass of the books not in the top charts that dominate. "Other" takes up a far larger slice. This is the long long long long tail in action.
