Books-A-Million, Now Second Largest Bookstore Chain In U.S., Also Pulls 100 DC Graphic Novels In Response To Kindle Fire Deal

Just last week, Bleeding Cool told you that Barnes & Noble was pulling 100 popular DC graphic novels off of shelves in response to DC’s plans to release them in digital form exclusively on Amazon’s Kindle Fire platform. Today, Publisher’s Weekly is reporting that Books-A-Million — which has become the nation’s second largest brick and mortar chain in the wake of the closing of Borders — is joining Barnes & Noble in this action:

In a release issued by Books-A-Million, CEO Terrance Finley said, “due to DC Comics plan to sell the digital format of their top 100 graphic novels exclusively through Amazon’s Kindle Fire, BAM Stores are currently removing physical copies of these titles from our shelves.” Finley said that supporting any publisher that “selectively limits distribution of their content,” is not in the interest of BAM customers. “We will not promote titles in our stores showrooms if publishers choose to pursue these exclusive arrangements that create an uneven playing field in the marketplace.”

The graphic novels involved include a hit-list of some of DC’s most popular books, including Watchmen, Sandman, and V for Vendetta.  Books-A-Million has over 200 stores in 23 states in the U.S., and was in talks to acquire some 35 Borders locations in the wake of that chain’s closure.
