Keeping Your Frenemy Close

Frenemy_of_the_StateVariety report that Frenemy of The State, an upcoming mini-series from Oni Press about a wealthy heiress working for the CIA, from star of The Office, Rashida Jones and Past Lies' Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir has already been sold as a "movie based on a graphic novel" to Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, though Variety seem to write "Jones co-wrote the original comic, published by Oni Press" in the past tense.  Hell the comic was only announced at San Diego.

Rashida will co-write the screenplay with Will McCormack. Brian Grazer is producing for Imagine. Eric Gitter will be a producer for Closed on Mondays, the company who just finished filming Scott Pilgrim and works as  Oni's production wing, run by Gitter and Peter Schwerin.

This does tend to be a trend now, selling the movie rights pre-comic-publication, and then promoting the fact and hell, why not? But the story the mainstream media want is that this is a pre-existing, already-published comic and they're happy to blur the edges when this is not the case..

In other actual gossip, this might not be the only Office-related comics news from Bleeding Cool today.

Let's see how it goes, eh?
