"Altered Carbon" Season 2: Netflix Recaps "Sleeve" Joel Kinnaman's Season 1 Run [VIDEO]

We've been going on about how useful it is for Netflix's Altered Carbon to have that "sleeves" concept from Richard K. Morgan's novels to work with, as we've been previewing its return. But for those coming to the series starting with the Anthony Mackie-lead second season and without the time to binge the Joel Kinnaman-starring first season, things might still be a little confusing. "Digitized consciousness transfers to bodies aka 'sleeves'" can get a wee bit complicated.

Thankfully, the fine folks at Netflix have offered up a recap of season 1, and let me just say that it does a fine job of getting new viewers up-to-speed – especially on the particulars of how "sleeves" work:

With the series returning in less than than two weeks (February 27), Netflix released an official teaser for Mackie's season as Takeshi Kovacs' "sleeve" – a teaser that offers a very important and deadly warning:

If you spend too much time chasing your ghosts, you might just end up becoming one yourself…

Altered Carbon season 2 also stars Renée Elise Goldsberry, Simone Missick, Chris Conner, Dina Shihabi, Torben Liebrecht, and James Saito. Series showrunner Alison Schapker wrote the second season finale, with Laeta Kalogridis penning the season opener. Joining Schapker and Kalogridis as executive producers are Skydance Television's David Ellison and Dana Goldberg, and James Middleton.

Here's what Schapker had to say earlier this week about the casting of Mackie and what he brings to the season:

"When I came aboard Altered Carbon, Laeta Kalogridis [season 1 showrunner] was already imagining Anthony Mackie as Season 2 Kovacs. So his casting was sort of baked in as a dream get from the time I arrived at the show and I completely concurred. I mean, he is just a phenomenal actor. And he can do the action and the physicality of the role of Kovacs so well, as we all have seen in his Marvel roles. But he also can bring a depth of character to the performance, and you see that in all the roles he's done, so we just were huge fans."
