"Turner & Hooch": Josh Peck Steps into Tom Hanks' Slobbered Shoes for Disney+ TV Reboot

Disney+ found its Scott Turner in Josh Peck for their television adaptation reboot of the beloved 1989 K-9 buddy cop film Turner & Hooch. The series received a full 12-episode season order. The updated series promotes Turner to U.S. Marshall, a considerable career boost considering his film counterpart detective, played by Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood).

The TV series reboot comes courtesy of Matt Nix (Burn Notice). The original 1989 film paired the two for a murder case and small-town conspiracy. The ultra-messy and hulking brute Hooch (Beasley) becomes the obsessively-clean Turner's only witness – and worst nightmare – in this variation of The Odd Couple. Despite their contrasting personalities, man and beast eventually develop a bond.

"Turner & Hooch" Original Production Details

Directed by Roger Spottiswoode, Turner & Hooch was written by Dennis Shryack, Michael Blodgett, Daniel Petrie Jr, Jim Cash, and Jack Epps Jr. The film became a hit at the box office grossing $71.1 million on a modest $13 million budget.

The original film also starred Mare Winningham, Craig T. Nelson, and Reginald VelJohnson. Following the film's success, Disney attempted to capitalize by adapting a pilot with Tom Wilson (Back to the Future Trilogy) as Turner and Beasley reprising his role. While the pilot was passed on, it aired on The Wonderful World of Disney in 1990.

When an ambitious, buttoned-up U.S. Marshal (Peck) inherits a big unruly dog, he soon realizes the pet he didn't want may be the partner he needs.

In addition to creating the series, Nix also serves as writer and executive producer. Josh Levy (Bones) will co-executive produce. Despite a lack of sequels and a lack of follow up TV series', the original 1989 film developed a cult following. The film is occasionally referenced in pop culture.
