"Riverdale" Season 4 "Chapter Sixty-Eight: Quiz Show": 1994 Film Retread Not Enough to Distract from Our "Dead Jughead" Fascination [SPOILER REVIEW]

This week's episode of The CW's Riverdale sure does live up to the name of the episode – taken from the 1994 film Quiz Show, of course. If you're familiar with the film, you already know the twist going into the episode. But everything is an homage to the film – guess somebody's a fan.

Then again, if you're not familiar with the film, this is probably a good time to mention MAJOR SPOILERS! No, not for the movie – I'm warning you that this article contains mega spoilers for this and previous episodes of the 'dale.

Now that we're all on the same page, let's dive in…

Veronica has now roped Cheryl into her weird and pointless rum war with Hiram Lodge, but they've bested him or something by turning Cheryl's mom's brothel into a private rum club. Hooray. Can we stop seeing this nonsense storyline now? I guess I should at least be glad that we're not treated to a speakeasy musical number every episode anymore. And now that La Bonne Nuit is a teen dance club and Josie is on Katy Keene, I hope they don't make a comeback.

Speaking of eye-rolling storylines, Archie catches his uncle Frank taking money from the construction company and former sheriff and current foreman Mr. Keller (who is basically running the entire company because Archie has absolutely no idea WTF he's doing) butts-heads with Frank and quits. Then Archie fires his uncle. He'll disappear from the show and find other work (I hear it's plentiful in Vancouver) and Archie will find some other dumb thing to obsess about. Perhaps Jughead's impending doom?

Speaking of Jughead, I can't decide if I like him and Betty together at this point. Like, Jughead needs to be his own person and live his own life – and maybe that would do Betty some good too. But no, they're staying together (for now…) because Jughead helped Betty get into Yale after being turned down? It's a little muddled how exactly that happened, but whatever.

Chances are after the quiz show cheating scandal (told you it wasn't original – right down to the "answers in the garbage" play), Betty won't be going to Yale anyway. Not that it will matter, because Jughead can't go to college if he's dead.

Oh – and in a month's time, Jughead will be dead. I wonder if they'll stretch out the "Jughead's death" episode a whole month, or we get to see that as early as next week.

I mean, there is that duel with Bret – so will they pull a bait and switch and have Jughead go out like Alexander Hamilton?

Has Riverdale gotten more ridiculous? You bet. Will I still keep watching and rolling my eyes and throwing popcorn at my TV every Wednesday night? Most likely. But I wish their stories were just a little bit more realistic and less "teenage wish fulfillment" sometimes. I mean, if you're going to go absolutely off the deep end, give me a body count again! More action, a little less fan fiction, if you please.

Have we killed Jughead yet? More importantly, wake me up with they bring him back, please. Because that's what we're all really waiting for.
