Wizards of the Coast's upcoming set for Magic: The Gathering, titled Theros: Beyond Death, is a set much unlike we have seen in recent years. It's heavily graveyard-centric without being as focal on death as its name suggests, and features many new spins on old Greco-Roman folklore.
However, where the set is quite like other sets is in the fact that its organization is very much the same as previous releases. There will be prerelease events the weekend before the release as with many, many sets past, and there will also be events and releases in terms of Magic: The Gathering: Arena.
And, as always, there are promotional cards tying into the set's releases as well. Let's take a look at these!
Buy-A-Box Promo: Athreos, Shroud-Veiled
The Buy-A-Box promo for those players who buy booster boxes of Theros: Beyond Death will be Athreos, Shroud-Veiled. This card hearkens back heavily to the older Athreos version which has been put to good use as a commander in Shadowborn Apostle Commander decks for as long as both cards have existed. This iteration feels like it may be seen commanding a more diverse set of reanimator decks, albeit slightly more relaxed than the older God of Passage version.
Bundle Promo: Arasta of the Endless Web
I hope you like Spiders, everyone! This promotional version of Arasta of the Endless Web will be released in Bundle packs of Theros: Beyond Death, alongside ten draft-style booster packs, lands, an oversized spindown die, and presumably other goodies as well (I only say "presumably" because the Spiders generated by Arasta may have eaten them by the time they get to you – just kidding!).
Friday Night Magic Promos
You can find the above cards in Standard Showdown packs for Theros: Beyond Death, when the set has officially been released.
What do you think about Wizards of the Coast's selection for promo cards? Do they hold a candle to promos of days past? Let us know your thoughts below!
Theros: Beyond Death will hold prerelease events for tabletop Magic on the weekend of January 17th-19th, release for tabletop play on Friday, January 24th, and release for Magic: The Gathering: Arena on Thursday, January 16th.
