The tweet asked with a gif of a shrugging Farrell, "Wait – is that you, #Oz?"

Jeffrey Wright, who plays Commissioner Jim Gordon, teased the start of shooting on January 4th.

Robert Pattinson replaced Ben Affleck as the Caped Crusader. Affleck played Bruce Wayne/Batman in two previous films for the DC Extended Universe, neither were solo films. The films were Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017). Farrell played the sadistic Bullseye opposite Affleck in 2003's Daredevil for Marvel under 20th Century Fox.

There's no shortage of threats with Reeves loading the film with three villains from Batman's rogue gallery: the aforementioned Penguin, Riddler (Paul Dano), and Catwoman ( Zoë Kravitz. Joining them are Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, John Turturo, and Jayme Lawson. Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin.

When rumors initially surfaced in November, Farrell's Dumbo costar Danny DeVito endorsed him for the role. DeVito played the role in Tim Burton's Batman Returns (1992). Farrell becomes the third actor to play the infamous Oswald Cobblepot in a live-action Batman film after Burgess Meredith and DeVito. Robin Lord Taylor played the character in FOX's Batman prequel series Gotham.

Farrell stars in Guy Ritchie's upcoming film The Gentlemen for STX Films. He'll also be in Ava for Freckle Films/Voltage Pictures; After Yang for A24; and Voyagers for Lionsgate. He's also currently filming The North Water, a miniseries for BBC Two.

The Batman comes to theaters June 25, 2021.
