Titans Escape! "Theros: Beyond Death" Spoilers – "Magic: The Gathering"

It's time to get excited, either out of sheer astonishment or sheer panic, because the Titans of Theros have been unleashed upon Magic: The Gathering!

Let's back up a second though – we only got this spoiler (and another, among other less-than-titanic spoilers) today and we have a few days more to go over first.

January 5th, 2020

Yesterday, around midday, we got our first glimpse of Siona, Captian of the Pyleas. At first glance it appears that Wizards of the Coast pushed her design quite heavily. Let's glance.

It's worth noting that on Twitter, on the tweet by user @Bloody where this was this was spoiled, I was the first person to make the point that Siona combos off with Shielded by Faith, an enchantment that is only legal in Eternal formats… Including Commander. How fun!

And listen, I get how eager you all are to see the Titans that have escaped the Nyxian Underworld. Let's make that happen, shall we?

Friends, meer Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath!

Okay, so it seems that any Titan so far has a triggered ability that goes off when sais Titan enters the battlefield and/or attacks – this is true also for the original Titan cycle from the older Core Sets – Sun Titan and friends are a good example of this beyond the Theroan Titans. It's also true (and a shame that it is, in my opinion!) that Titans are Elder Giants, and not given their own creature type. It'd be neat to also see this type-line addition in the Eldrazi Titans, to be sure, but so far, it's not going to happen.

But that's not the only Titan we got to see today – here's Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger!

Note: As of writing this article, Kroxa hasn't been input into Scryfall's database. However, we can glean that the above stated is true of all Titans in this set, and not just Uro. Additionally, they have to be sacrificed when they enter the battlefield unless they escaped, and likely all have an Escape cost of XXYY, where X and Y are colors of mana, alongside five cards being exiled.

The cool thing about these Titans is that they still get their "Enters the battlefield" ability to trigger even when they are brought onto the battlefield without escaping.

Now then, I expect a few less-confrontational Theroans will make Whirlwind Denials about the return of the mighty Titans of Theros, but nevertheless they have escaped and there's little we can do about it!
