Will Retailers Miss The Rarest MMPR/TMNT Variant of Them All?

With Boom Studios variant covers becoming quite the sought-after collector and speculator items of late – from second printings to one per stores  – and Power Rangers comics heating up once again with speculators  it looks like people might be sleeping on the recently announced Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 black & white variant edition. Like the name says, it's a fully B&W variant edition from the cover through every story page as a nod to the Turtles' indie comics roots.

Though some might debate if this is a first or second printing – perhaps a First & a Half (Shell) Printing – we do know that retailers and fans were inundated with one of the biggest weeks of both new releases and FOCs, meaning they might have missed out on the announcement of a new MMPR/TMNT #1 variant on a launch issue that has already sold close to 60,000 copies.

And while the variant cover isn't ratioed, retailers can only unlock this edition by re-ordering at least ONE copy of any of the 5 main covers of MMPR/TMNT #1, which is slightly more complicated than what Boom's rival Image Comics does with their top-selling super hero series.

Unlike Spawn, MMPR/TMNT has not one, but two giant fanbases of nostalgic fans who've demonstrated how much they'll show up for anything with Rangers or Turtles, so a homage to the highly coveted first appearance of the Ninja Turtles from Mirage Comics is the perfect kind of irresistible to these fans.

Plus, expect even more interest in the series next Wednesday as MMPR/TMNT #2 features the first appearance of a new Shredder who, based on the series, I imagine might think it's Morphin Time…

But if retailers order low without taking that nostalgia into account, or worse yet miss qualifying entirely due to the chaos of the holidays, this may well be the most rare variant on the series – alongside the red-hot convention preview issues that prompted an entire Speculator Corner  – and cause the same kind of frenzy we've seen for other Boom variants of late.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 black & white edition FOCs on Monday and is on-sale January 29th at your local comic shop…that is, if they order enough copies…
