REVIEW: Bettie Page Unbound #8 "Avallone's Script Never Let The Pacing Sag"

(Dynamite Entertainment, creative team: David Avallone, Matt Gaudio, Julius Ohta, Pasquale Qualano, Ellie Wright, Sheelagh D, Taylor Esposito)

The titular pin up girl is stuck on a train with an identical doppelganger and the beginnings of uncovering a conspiracy. This issue swings hard with 1950s styled science fiction ideas and using the narrative device of a train as a mechanism for increasing tension was a solid craft choice. The action scenes from Gaudio, Ohta, Qualano, Wright and Esposito did a great job at conveying the urgency and immediacy of what was happening, and Avallone's script never let the pacing sag.

The only problems were connecting with the characters: Page herself is a cipher, despite some details about her history coming out (she was born in Nashville) and her hive mind antagonists didn't have any new ideas behind them. This is a book with a high degree of craft and a medium degree of innovation that will be seen as genius by fans of the property and solid for any other readers. RATING: HONORABLE MENTION.
