At The Game Awards last night, Wizards of the Coast publicly unveiled a number of interesting things, including their new MMO, Magic: Legends. But a good many Magic: The Gathering players were delighted to see the cinematic trailer teasing Wizards' next upcoming expansion set, Theros: Beyond Death.
In the trailer, the Planeswalker known as Elspeth Tirel makes an attempt to escape the Underworld of Nyx, the realm of the Theroan divine. Will she succeed, or will she fail miserably to make a break for it? Let's watch the trailer and find out!
The trailer, as seen above, starts out with Elspeth amongst a throng of the Returned, a legion of the dead residing in Nyx's Underworld. She removes her golden mask, something which all Returned are forced to wear, and makes an attempt to escape, but sees a young girl heading towards the destination where the other Returned are shambling mindlessly toward. She attempts to save the girl, only to see that her face is nightmarishly altered.
This is the work of Ashiok, a Planeswalker who deals in nightmares and the nature of such things. In the past, they have managed to put the mortal population of an entire Theroan city-state to sleep and control them through their nightmares, so they're nothing to trifle with. (Note: Ashiok is canonically nonbinary, and as such we are using "they" pronouns to refer to Ashiok, and will continue to do so in future relevant articles.)
Ashiok then sends Elspeth sinking into a watery demise underneath the procession of the Returned, but it mostly appears to be an illusion. As Elspeth drowns, she realizes the depths' illusory nature and heads out to fight again.
What do you think of this trailer? Are these actually necessary for Wizards of the Coast to sell Magic: The Gathering products? Do they simply serve as a treat for players wishing to hype up the story? I'm curious to see what people think. Let us know!
