REVIEW: Black Terror #3 — "There's A Very Odd Sense Of Humor At Work"

… uh … that's weird. This issue offers a Superboy-class teen sidekick who had a very meta experience and relives his life, fully aware of everything that happened before. Starting out weird, it gets brutal and weird again and then kind of loops back on itself. There's a very odd sense of humor at work (not so hard to see coming with Bemis on the script), one that lampoons and sends up the superheroic ideal while playing in their sandbox. The "perception of time" gag isn't as gasp-inducing as Jon Osterman's shenanigans but there's a mildly useful dose of future past along with some interesting turns of phrase in the dialogue (such as, "I would like your permission to give him a mild beating before we do so"). If surrealist superhero shtick is your jam, you'll definitely want to pick this issue up. It's a drastic improvement from the previous two navel gazing issues. Unfortunately, this is still a little like walking a tightrope in that it's no easy feat to be sure of your footing here. It would be impossible to say there's no entertainment value here, but it's not easy to say exactly what that value is. RATING: HONORABLE MENTION.
