"The Batman": Danny DeVito Endorses Colin Farrell as The Penguin

While promoting his latest film, Jumaji: The Next Level, Danny DeVito was asked what he thought about Colin Farrell's potential casting as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. DeVito played the character in Batman Returns (1992) directed by Tim Burton. Speaking with Screen Rant the actor, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, complimented Farrell's work. The two starred in Burton's live-action Dumbo (2019) for Disney.

"Colin's a great actor… He's a good friend of mine. I've known him for many years and I think he's going to do a great job as the Penguin. It's going to be really interesting to see his take on it."

Other Endorsements

Michelle Pfeiffer, who played Selina Kyle Catwoman in Batman Returns; Halle Berry, who played Patience Phillips Catwoman in Catwoman (2004); and Anne Hathaway, who also played Selina in The Dark Knight Rises (2012) all showed support for Zoë Kravitz when cast for the role for Reeves' film.

Farrell hasn't finalized the deal with Warner Bros to be in Matt Reeves' The Batman. If cast, Farrell becomes the third actor to play The Penguin in a live-action film after Burgess Meredith and DeVito. Robin Lord Taylor played Cobblepot in the Batman prequel television series Gotham.

Farrell Plays a Mean Villain

Farrell is no stranger to playing a comic book villain in a film with his 2003 turn as the sadistic Bullseye in Daredevil co-starring Ben Affleck. Ironically, Affleck played Bruce Wayne/Batman for two films, leaving the role after Justice League (2017). Robert Pattinson takes over the role for The Batman.

Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin. The film stars Pattinson, Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, and Jayme Lawson.
