"Beverly Hills Cop 4": Netflix Reaches Deal with Paramount to License Film

Eddie Murphy's nostalgia wave is complete with his return to Saturday Night Live, Coming to America sequel and now, the fourth film of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. Netflix and Paramount, who owns the IP, reached a one-time license deal with an option for a sequel for Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, according to Deadline Hollywood.

Murphy reprises the role of Axel Foley, the wise-cracking Detroit cop with a penchant for trouble. The franchise helped solidify his film career since first playing the role in Beverly Hills Cop (1984). The success of the film generated a sequel in 1987's Beverly Hills Cop II. The last time the actor/comedian played the role was over 25 years ago in Beverly Hills Cop III (1994). No word if Murphy's co-star Judge Reinhold, who plays Billy Rosewood, will return given his participation in the previous three films.

The Beverly Hills Cop franchise attracted premier directors in Martin Brest, Tony Scott, and John Landis. The three films grossed a combined $712 million in the global box office. Perhaps the deal provided a low risk, high reward option for Paramount with the underperforming sequels in Doctor Sleep and Terminator: Dark Fate. A BHC television series never left development before the studio scrapped the project.

Murphy has working relationships with Netflix and Paramount. The streaming service released Murphy's biopic Dolemite is My Name about Rudy Ray Moore. The comedian also looks to release a future stand-up special. Paramount will release the Coming to America sequel. Murphy returns to host SNL on December 21st marking the first appearance in 35 years.

You can stream Dolemite is My Name on Netflix. The Coming to America sequel hits theaters in 2020.
