Orbital Comics of London Launches #OldComicsDay

Much of the discussion at Thought Bubble in Harrogate this weekend revolved around Orbital Comics' decision to a) stop selling new comic books from Diamond Comic Distributors and b) for online store Comic Toolbox to take on the task of providing new comics for Orbital Comics' pull list subscribers (but that's all) from within Orbital Comics, using their own Diamond account. I understand e-mails have been going out to Orbital customers informing them of the change and asking permission, under data protection rules, for Comic Toolbox to have their details and continue their standing order.

But for Orbital Comics, shelf copies of new titles are a thing of the past. I popped in on my way back from the show, to see graphic novels fulling the place where the new singles used to sit. This is the new Orbital Comics. We'll see how Week One of the new Toolbox regime plays out on Wednesday, and if Diamond will throw a fit over their new arrangement.

There was certainly no love lost from Diamond employees I talked to at Thought Bubble, one of which told me he only knew the latest news from reading Bleeding Cool. But other retailers I spoke to seemed to relish in the vicarious thrill of telling Diamond where to go. Though none would dare do what Orbital just did.

So what next? Well, with Jason Atomic taking over their social media presence, it does seem to have a bit of a new vim. And, as they no longer have a New Comics Day – why not make every day an Old Comics Day?
