Jason Momoa Says He Pitched The Concept For "Aquaman 2"

There's no denying that Warner Bros. Aquaman is one of the best DC projects in recent years, with overwhelming success from both critics and audiences. With that acclaim came the desire for a sequel, and Aquaman star Jason Momoa has now revealed that he's playing a role in the discussions for the proposed Aquaman 2.

When speaking to Esquire recently, Momoa divulged the behind-the-scenes negotiations for a sequel and revealed,

"I came in with a big pitch, I came in with the whole thing mapped out, and they loved it."

Clearly the studio was fond of his plans for the film, as the film is actively in development with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Momoa currently writing the film. James Wan has been said to be in negotiations to return as the director — however, nothing is currently solid on that front just yet. One thing that has been confirmed recently is that Black Manta will return to the sequel (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) after facing off against Aquaman in the first film.

Momoa previously opened up about the topic on The Ellen Show, suggesting the direction of the film will be slightly different from the first. The actor explained:

"I was really, really, really, passionate, to do the second one because it's the first time where it's all on Earth. It's combining land and sea, kind of like what I'm doing with this [environmental issue]. There's no outside aliens destroying Earth, it's us. And so I was excited to get back in there, and so I've been working with our previous writer, and getting in there, and we've got a locked story, and we're getting into it."

The idea of a more grounded Aquaman 2 sounds like an intriguing concept and if this isn't enough to solidify the fact that Momoa remains the perfect choice for the role, I don't know what does. Aquaman 2 is currently expected to receive a December 16, 2022 release date, with a spin-off film about the Trench still in development as well.

Are you excited for a more hands-on Momoa in the Aquaman sequel?
