“Thor 4” Could Possibly Include a Breast Cancer Storyline for Jane Foster

After confirming that the fourth Thor film, Thor: Love and Thunder would feature Natalie Portman becoming the titular character in some capacity, speculation began to run rampant. Many wondered what events could lead to Portman’s Jane Foster becoming the next Thor, and director Taika Waititi opened up about the chance to acknowledge the comic storyline that played a pivotal role.

During the press junket for Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, the director spoke to Variety and brought up serious life events that lead to Jane embracing the power, telling them, thor

“I think that’s a really powerful part of the books. I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on. Personally, I really love that storyline, but whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen.”

Waititi’s later elaborates by explaining,

“We’re not sure if we’re going to do a complete lift of that whole storyline. These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes, like, ‘Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer. We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine.’”

In her comic run, Jane is diagnosed with breast cancer and shortly after a woman embraces the Thor mantle, wielding Thor’s unstoppable abilities. The woman is in-fact Jane, and when under the guise of Thor, her body is relieved of the cancer symptoms. Though it isn’t a complete cure, this is what adds the dual element of power and vulnerability that could be a great choice to incorporate into Portman’s new position of power.

The film has yet to begin production, so what ends up in the film could be something derived from the comics or something else entirely, but it’ll be interesting to see if Thor: Love and Thunder embraces the source material for this particular story. Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released Nov. 5, 2021, so we’ll have plenty of time to speculate.
