"6 Underground": Michael Bay Teams Up with "Deadpool" Writers for Big Netflix Action Movie [Trailer]

Michael Bay is the latest filmmaker to join the Netflix stable of near-unlimited budgets for A-list directors. And he filmed a script by the screenwriters of Deadpool, Paul Wernick and Rhett Rheese. Ryan Reynolds plays the lead with Melanie Laurent, Ben Hardy, Adria Arjona, Dave Franco and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as his team.

It seems to be about six dodgy people who fake their deaths so they can become secret global vigilantes. As people tend to do. When they want to be like Bruce Wayne without dressing up like a funny animal. If this were real life, these people would be unbearably awful, but in the Michael Bay Universe, they are heroes. Yay.

Yay for the Bay Superteam

This might be the closest Michael Bay gets to making a superhero team movie, so take that how you like. Of course everyone is very pretty. Why would a big action movie with a $150 million budget want to cast ugly people in it? Of course there will be glamourous international locations, glamourous fashions, flash cars and lovingly rendered explosions.

I'm assuming they're saving the funniest dialogue for the actual movie itself. The Sneaker Pimps song the movie takes its title from doesn't seem to be anywhere. Oh well. We should be glad Netflix are producing a big, dumb, slick action movie with crazy setpieces that don't feature superheroes or giant robots. Just jerks. I hope they're fun, snarky jerks.

No one really expected this, nor is anyone particularly surprised by this. Netflix is riding high with Martin Scorsese getting Oscar buzz for his movie The Irishman. The streamer's next Holy Grail is a big action movie franchise. Netflix hopes 6 Underground becomes the first in a series of decadent, massive escapist action movies. That's if enough people stream it and make the algorithms purr.

6 Underground premieres on Netflix on December 13th.
