“Thor: Love and Thunder” Director Taika Waititi on Thor Odinson’s Status – New “Power Couple”?

Director Taika Waititi reinvigorated the Thor franchise for the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Thor: Ragnarok. Setting his sights on the fourth film, Thor: Love and Thunder sees not only Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster official return to the franchise, but re-introducing her to fans as Mighty Thor. This begs to ask, what of Thor Odinson, played by Chris Hemsworth?

The New Zealand director spoke with Entertainment Tonight at Disney’s D23 Expo 2019 about his fate:

“[She’s] a Thor. There’s still the other original Thor [Odinson]. She’s not called Female Thor. In the comics, she’s called the Mighty Thor. …Couldn’t be more happy and excited.”

There you have it. Two “Gods of Thunder” which puts new meaning to the phrase “Power Couple.”

“Thor 4”: Taika Waititi to Write and Direct Sequel, “Akira” Delayed Again

Hemsworth’s played the god of thunder seven times since 2011’s Thor, which spawned three sequels: The Dark World (2013), and Ragnarok (2017) with the upcoming eighth time in Love and Thunder. He’s also appeared in all four Avengers films: The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Endgame left the king of Asgard setting on his new journey with the Guardians of the Galaxy – leaving behind New Asgard on earth in the hands of Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) as the new ruler.

Portman’s appeared in two of the franchise films skipping Ragnarok. She did provide an off-screen vocal cameo in Endgame. To explain Foster’s absence from the third film, Odinson revealed they broke up.

In the comics, Foster became the new Thor when Odinson was no longer able to wield Mjolnir, his hammer. What is strange is how they’ll explain how Mjolnir’s reformed since it was broken in the hands of Hela (Cate Blanchett) in the events of Ragnarok. Odinson and Captain America (Chris Evans) were able to wield Mjolnir through the time heist for their second round with Thanos in Endgame before Cap returned the legendary hammer to its rightful place in the past at the film’s conclusion.
