"Coming to America 2": Tracy Morgan Cast in Sequel

Saturday Night Live alum Tracy Morgan is joining the cast of the highly anticipated Coming to America 2, the sequel to the 1988 John Landis comedy starring Eddie Murphy, who also co-wrote with David Sheffield and Barry W. Blaustein. Morgan will be playing Reem, a hustler and brother of Leslie Jones' character, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Murphy and Morgan are former SNL cast members for the NBC late night staple, while Jones has been in the cast since 2014. James Earl Jones, John Amos and Shari Headley will reprise their roles from the first film as King Jaffe Joffer, Cleo and Lisa McDowell, respectively. Aside from their primary characters in Prince Akeem and his best friend Semmi, Murphy and Arsenio Hall also played multiple roles and it won't be surprising if they do so for the sequel as well.

The events of the 1988 film saw the prince escaping his arranged marriage in the fictional African nation of Zamunda and flee to America with Semmi. They arrive in Queens, New York where they found themselves working in fast food in Akeem's own quest for a wife. The sequel sees the future king, who discovers he may have a long-lost son after a one night stand and finds himself needing to return to America and honor his own father's dying wish to groom him to be the new prince. The son is a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle with Jones playing his mother.

Craig Brewer (Empire, Black Snake Moan), who just completed the biopic Dolemite Is My Name also starring Murphy, will direct the Coming to America sequel for Paramount with Kenya Barris penning the screenplay from Sheffield and Blaustein's earlier draft.

Emmy-nominated for his work on 30 Rock and SNL, you can catch Morgan on TBS' The Last O.G..

Slated for a December 18th, 2020 release, the film also stars Wesley Snipes, Rick Ross, and Kiki Layne.
