"Animal Kingdom" Season 4, Episode 12: The Codys Suffer "Ghosts," Old & New [SPOILER REVIEW]

Welcome back to my little corner of action-packed television, friends! Pull up some couch, make yourself comfy, and dig into the popcorn, because there is plenty of need for it with tonight's episode of TNT's Animal Kingdom: "Ghosts."

What is the fate of Deran's boyfriend, Adrian? Will Angela be even more manipulative towards J? Does Pope magically become sane? Does Smurf get less controlling? Find out the answers to these questions and more ahead! Of course, there are hella spoilers ahead, and tonight's episode is a doozie. So consider yourself warned.

That being said, Pope is still crazy and has some serious mommy issues…but we'll tackle that and his little mom, too…in a bit.

MAJOR "ANIMAL KINGDOM" SPOILERS AHEAD!

Smurf (Ellen Barkin) wakes up on a mystery yacht, Pope (Shawn Hatsoy) raids her perfume (we don't know either. It's very Norman Bates.), Craig (Ben Robson) comes home to Renn and Nick every night, and it's domestically adorable and I am 4000% here for it.

J (Finn Cole) is nervous that Smurf is going to not show up and leave them high and dry, Angela (Emily Deschanel) tries to talk them out of it, and Deran (Jake Weary) talks to Adrian (Spencer Treat Clark) about relocation countries. To say that they're all a little unsure is an understatement.

Back in the 70s, Smurf (Leila George) is still eaten up over losing Colin, and uses that as leverage to get a car from Jed to get off his farm. Will we see what the inciting incident is that makes them Smurf's endgame? We'll find out!

But here in 2019, it's finally heist time! Queue the confetti, strippers, and blow! (Just kidding, Mom) Smurf tells J that Adrian has been talking to the cops and Deran knows, but isn't strong enough to do what needs to be done.

You leave my sweet little surfer alone, J!

Smurf and Pope go visit her old friends on the farm while the rest of the boys tunnel in to find the bunker full of gold. Very "spanish conqueror" meets "doomsday preppers". She introduces Pope to his uncle Jed and cousin Odin – it's such a wild ride.

Pope isn't enjoying the walk through memory lane as much as Jed is – and speaking of people enjoying things, Angela is enjoying raiding Smurf's closet and trying on her life while everyone else is away and heist-ing. Of course, trying on Smurf's life means her stash of oxy as well… oh, Angela – I almost believed you were going to stay clean.

Back in the 70s, there's the incident that's left such a bad taste in Smurf's mouth – Jed tries to force himself on her and she retaliates by hitting him in the face with a shovel and then running. Unfortunately for Smurf, running while 8 months pregnant causes labor – a very inopportune time for the twins to come.

Back in the present, the boys finish playing gold miner and Smurf takes Jed out to the bunker… but before he can get it open, Smurf shoots him point blank and starts a shootout with Jed's sons.

Of course, Pope comes to her side and gets her out of there before she gets more than a leg wound… and they meet up with the other guys.

It's a shame though that Smurf's plan was to die in that shootout that she started. Pope totally ruined that plan – of course, her plan was for her and Pope to die back at the farm. But no, that couldn't happen. Instead, she still gets her way; Smurf threatens to shoot Pope if he doesn't shoot her first, and it looks like she's about to do it…

J shoots her – right through the head!!! We told you there would be major spoilers!!!

After that harrowing and traumatic event, they pack up their dead Smurf and drive back home, to put her to rest in her bed, so that they can say she died of cancer and avoid any heat from the cops.

Pope is predictably spinning out and J is the level-headed one making sure that the situation is under control – leaving Craig free to be completely devastated at losing his mom, and rightly so. We forget how sad this event is – even though Smurf was far from mother of the millennium.

J is feeling "feelings" so Angela of course chooses this moment to antagonize him. Ugh!

Deran goes back home to Adrian and tells him that they're getting the hell out of there, and never coming back. Oh, how I hope they make it to Indonesia like they talked about.

And in the 70's, Smurf gives birth to – surprise! – twins, Julia and Andrew. In the present, the only surviving one, Andrew (aka Pope) puts his "mommy dearest" to rest.

So… who's ready for next week's finale? Just give me some time to recover from that bombshell of an episode first, okay, Animal Kingdom?

Animal Kingdom season 4, episode 13 "Smurf": In the aftermath of Smurf's heist, the Codys work to protect their reputation while friends and enemies from the past close in; Deran realizes there is only one way to keep Adrian safe; Pope and J's growing tension reaches a boiling point.
