It’s not too often that a kids cartoon show is around for twenty years, let alone pulling in some of its highest ratings ever. If you’re Nickelodeon, you are lucky enough to know what that feels like – with over two million people watching SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout: a celebration of two decades of all things SpongeBob SquarePants. In addition to that, it was announced that the kid’s (of all ages) network had renewed SpongeBob SquarePants for a 13th season – with an order of 13 more episodes, which will push the series past the 250 episodes mark by the time the season ends.
This shouldn’t be too big of a surprise: the show’s pretty much been the number one kids show on television for thepast 17 years. Add to that a highly successful Broadway musical and a third movie (The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge) set to hit movie theaters in May 2020, and it’s pretty easy to see how Bikini Bottom’s GOAT and his crew won’t be leaving the pop culture landscape any time soon.
At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2019, Bleeding Cool had the chance to sit down with Co-Executive Producer Marc Ceccarelli, Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), and Rodger Bumpass (Squidward) to discuss the franchise’s past and current plans – and possibly at some things to come:
