Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, 28th July 2019 – The House (Of X) Always Wins

This is the Top Ten Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait till the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion. And this week there was only one contender. House Of X #1. Number one in every shop in the survey. And while Batman: Curse Of White Knight came second, that wasn't universal. The House Always Wins…

This week, we have six Marvel and four DC titles in our top ten, but the real surprise is that House of X took first place over Batman: Curse of the White Knight #1 (although there was only a two-copy spread between the two. Marvel had four first issues in the top ten, which indicates that fans are interested in Marvel's new wave of books–and that's a good thing

House of X performed admirably this week at FFF topping our Weekly Bestseller list at #1. Between something like 10 variants this is the first X book to sell so well. It's an interesting change of pace. We'll see if Hickman can keep Batman dethroned for long. Speaking of, Curse of the White Knight was our #2 book this week outselling Guardians of the Galaxy by ONE copy. Detective Comics hit the list of course (though it was lower than usual at #4) and surprisingly last week's Batman #75 managed to outsell Funeral Pyre. I hope that isn't proof that Marvel might be over-saturating this whole Absolute Carnage event, but In Donny I trust. Other than the Bane cover, we haven't been selling the cardstock variants as well as we might be if they were a dollar cheaper. It really comes down to people not wanting to pay $5 or in many cases $6(!) for a different cover. DC really didn't think it through and while we might not be losing money as we're ordering less of most of the marked-up covers, we aren't selling covers that in all rights should be popular. Speaking of seeing what sticks, Valkyrie's debut issue has sold well with a handful of people adding the books to their pulls. Al Ewing is on a roll with Immortal Hulk, I hope he brings some of that steam to this event spin-off. With Powers of TEN coming next week we'll have to see if anybody still cares about the X-Men for more than a week.

Build a House of X and people will come. The premier issue of Hickman's X-Men sold more copies than any single book in its first week in the past year, outselling Batman Curse of the White Knight nearly threefold. It's a testament to how lackluster the selection of X-books has been over the past few years that customers I have never known to read X-Men readily picked up the issue, with renewed hopes for cohesive storytelling and intriguing plot-lines with Hickman at the helm. There really isn't much else to say this week; With Powers of X #1 out next week. it looks as though the "Dawn of X" will be leading in sales for weeks to come.

Not the great week I thought it would be. House of X took the top spot though a lot of people passed or complained about the $5.99 price. It did not sell nearly as well as I thought it would. More people complained about the $5.99 issue than the higher-priced last Uncanny X Men 1 at $7.99. Weird. Batman Curse of the White Knight 1 barely a top ten book for us. Interest seems to have dropped a lot. Not a red hot summer sales week sadly.
