Salma Hayek in Talks to Join Marvel's "The Eternals"

Marvel may be adding another high profile actor to The Eternals in Salma Hayek. While details of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase IV are being sorted out, The Eternals is slated to start shooting later this year. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar and Emmy-nominee joins Angelina Jolie, who is also in negotiations and set to star in the film. Confirmed for the cast are Richard Madden (Game of Thrones, Rocketman), who's rumored to be playing the Eternals' leader Ikaris, and Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley, Stuber).

Based on the 1976 comic by Jack Kirby, The Eternals are superpowered and near-immortal beings who defend the Earth against their evil counterparts, the Deviants. Matthew and Ryan Firpo wrote the screenplay with Chloé Zhao (The Rider, Songs My Brother Taught Me) directing.

In the comics, the Eternals met Thor and the Asgardians; and the Inhumans in their adventures spanning a millennia. They also encountered Thanos and their experience with the Mad Titan proved invaluable in earth's defense. All the Eternals share certain characteristics like psionic abilities, enhanced strength, and the ability to channel cosmic energy through their hands and eyes. Each Eternal's capabilities depends on which of these attributes he/she wants to focus on.

If Hayek joins, she'll reinforce the inclusive synergy of Marvel, which is rare for such a studio to blend older and new Hollywood so well. While helping to propel up-and-coming talent like Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Brie Larsen, Chris Pratt, Chadwick Boseman, and Sebastian Stan,  the studio's also found places for older actors to share in the limelight like Michael DouglasMichelle Phiffer,  Jeff BridgesWilliam HurtMickey RourkeRene Russo, Sir Anthony HopkinsCate BlanchettTommy Lee JonesGlenn CloseSylvester StalloneDjimon HonsouMichelle Yeoh.

You can catch Hayek in Drunk Parents, now available on digital and streaming. She reprises her role as Sonia Kincaid in The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, the sequel to 2017's The Hitman's Bodyguard, with the returning Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson slated for a 2020 release.
