The Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, 23rd June 2019 – The Dark Clark Returns

This is the Top Ten Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait till the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion. Superman Year One by Frank Miller, John Romita and Danny Miki topped the chart even at a high price, but there was little between that, Batman and Justice League for the top three. Deadpool is beginning to rise, as is Savage Sword Of Conan. And that's quite the appearance for a samurai bunny at number 10… say, do you remember when Frank Miller drew him?

Who had this to say…

Light week at FFF this week for new releases. Sure, Superman Year One is at the top of the list which is a little bit of a shock. The format was not a favorite when Batman Damned came out (though that sold swimmingly for some reason…) and both Miller and Romita JR are very hit or miss creators at our store. But I underordered the last Frank Miller Joint (DKIII) so I thought I'd anticipate a few more pulls than normal. Just under Supes was Batman, still hanging near the top of every weekly bestseller list. Donny Cates hits the list twice this week with Guardians taking the #3 spot and Silver Surfer Black (on it's second week) still selling strong. Speaking of selling strong on subsequent weeks, Walking Dead #192 is still going strong, outselling most of the new books of the week again in its THIRD week. Event Leviathan also saw a small uptick in its second week. Turns out this Bendis guy can be pretty good if you give him a chance. Uncanny and Firefly round out our Top Ten list this week. Rosenberg's X-Men has brought the book closer to sales that the book used to have once long, long ago. Firefly is a fan favorite with several good covers every month. It's a guaranteed seller for us for now.

Batman is broken, in terms of sales at least. It has dropped a lot sales wise. Really mixed week for sales.

Why Batman is the top seller in a week where high profile creator Frank Miller had a #1 issue launch under DCs top shelf imprint can only be attributed to poor marketing, and I guarantee it would have taken the top spot with a little Dark Knight branding on the cover since this is after all that version of Superman. No other real surprises this week. Daredevil, Justice League, Guardians, all strong and consistent sellers.

An Underwhelming week, luckily people were willing to give Frank Miller yet another go with his latest project. Foot traffic was light and customers came in asking for recommendations as very little was jumping off the stands by itself.

So for this week Monstress is almost near the top. Hopefully by next week it will be in the top

The easy best seller this year is Frank Miller and John Romita, Jr.'s SUPERMAN YEAR ONE. A superstar team re-telling the Kryptonian's origins in a prestige mini-series under the Black Label imprint makes for a strong draw.

Just behind that is our usual king of the hill, BATMAN, followed by two of the stronger selling team books this year: JUSTICE LEAGUE and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.

The bottom of the list had a lot of ties, and a little bit of diversity outside of the usual Marvel and DC books, with the new publisher relaunch of USAGI YOJIMBO as well the consistently great MONSTRESS both doing fair numbers this week.

Notable sales…

  • Wonder Woman #28 9.4 $300 steampunk variant CGC graded
