“Game of Thrones” Prequel Shooting in Old Stomping Grounds

There’s a bit of familiar activity going on in Northern Ireland, where the folks behind the Game of Thrones prequel series are currently shooting a pilot.

Season 8, Episdoe 2

The new series is assumed to be working under the auspices of a future home at HBO, but the series won’t actually get a production order until after the pilot is show.

Jane Goldman, who worked on X-Men: First Class, is the showrunner for the possible Game of Thrones prequel series, which will also be overseen by franchise creator George R.R. Martin and director S.J. Clarkson. The series is rumored to be set thousands of years prior to the events of the recently wrapped Game of Thrones series.

George R.R. Martin has talked about the series before, with Entertainment Weekly:

“Westeros is a very different place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series.”

The official description of the series echoes Martin’s statement:

“Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

The cast for the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel includes Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Miranda Richardson, Josh Whitehouse, Sheila Atim, Jamie Campbell Bower, Ivanno Jeremiah, Toby Regbo, and Alex Sharp.

Martin has previously mentioned that the Game of Thrones prequel will be caller The Long Night, and it’s possible we’ll see the series as early as late 2020 if the pilot scores the project a series order.
