Joyce Chin, on her Latest Battles with Health Insurance

Joyce Chin is a comic book creator, recently working with Gail Simone drawing a Vampirella comic book published in Playboy Magazine. She was on her way to a comic show in Chicago as that was published, with her husband, comic creator Arthur Adams, when she suffered a stroke. She was admitted to the local hospital but being in another state, as well as the necessary treatment has caused quite a challenge to her insurance. She posted the following, publicly, to Facebook.

For those of you in countries with healthcare that makes sense that are following along on my current American Healthcare journey post aneurism…

Bills so far *not covered in any way* by the insurance we pay around 24k a year for…Anesthesia, Brain Surgery, and the infectious disease specialist they brought in when I was spiking a 104 fever.

I still am waiting on the ambulance bill and two or three other brain surgery/cranial procedure bills. Ambulances typically run 5 to 8k. Sometimes it’s covered, sometimes not, depends if the company is declared “out of network” by insurance. The other major brain surgery was a different doc, so I don’t know if it will be covered or not.

I’m not sure if there will be more uncovered by insurance of the outstanding bills, but the uncovered by insurance stuff is already around 20k. I’m told I can contest these. And I’ll be starting that ball rolling soon.

That 20k is not counting the stuff that was partially covered by insurance that we still had to pay some percentage of. That’s thousands more.

If you guys outside the US get a choice about keeping a partial or fully universal health care system, or switching to something similar to the US, *don’t choose what we got*.

Again, it’s at this point that I usually like to mention that you’ve never seen a British comics creator crowdfund for healthcare coats… still haven’t seen one.
