Watchmen Collection Jumps In Price For HBO Edition by $5 – or $10 for Lenticular

In DC's recent August 2019 solicitations, they listed the Watchmen International New Edition as a hardcover for $24.99. Rather, it was meant to be in paperback. And rather that $24.99 or the previous price for the paperback, $19.99, it will now be $29.99 – a 50% increase and $10 more than the previously listed price.

That's partially down to the new HBO Watchmen series making the pricepoint on such a book less elastic – and increased price won't put as many customers off as the increase in revenue it will bring. But also DC Comics are adding lenticular covers to the book.

The International edition isn't allowed to use the Watchmen's trademark smiley button image on its cover – because outside of the USA, they don't own the trademark. The Smiley Company does. The image can be used inside the pages, but not on the cover without paying the miley Company royalties, which DC is not want to do.

Instead the customer is being asked to pay ten bucks more for a front cover that has a NOW AN HBO SERIES tag, replacing the previous HUGO AWARD WINNER tag and does this…

This edition will also be published sooner than expected, coming out on the 21st of August rather than the planned 25th of September.

The standard Watchmen trade paperback is also getting a price jump from $19.99 to $24.99, a 25% increase along with that HBO tag. But DC Comics does point out that the previous printing at $19.99 is still available if retailers want to jump in.
