Netflix Adds 'City of Ghosts' to Growing Roster of Kids Shows

Streaming giant Netflix has added another new animated kids show to its growing roster of family friendly programming, this time from Adventure Time veteran Elizabeth Ito.

City of Ghosts will switch up its format, blending animation with a documentary feel. The show will follow a group of children as they explore their city through the stories of the ghosts that dwell there.

Ito won an Emmy award for her work on Cartoon Network's Adventure Time, where she worked as a writer and director. Ito also created the animated short Welcome to My Life, which also ran on Cartoon Network. Ito will be acting as executive producer and showrunner on City of Ghosts, which will mark her first foray into running a show.

Ito will be using her own experiences as a fourth generation Japanese American to explore how the dynamics of a city can change over time, as different people, cultures, and cultural norms can change the way communities look, feel, and operate.

There is an incredible amount of new, original animated content coming to Netflix soon, most of it being produced at Netflix Animation in California. The Power Puff Girls' Craig McCracken is producing Kid Cosmic, Matt Layzell is working on Battle Kitty, Shion Takeuchi has Inside Job on the way, while Jorge Gutierrez is getting Maya and the Three ready for release.

Netflix appears to be cementing a solid foundation of children's programming prior to the launch of Disney+ this fall, which will be pulling most, if not all, of the Disney owned programming away from the older service. Hulu seems to have taken note of this change as well, but that service is owned by Disney, so Hulu's increase in kid's programming is probably a counter-measure against services looking to increase their competitiveness with Disney+ when it finally launches.
