This morning, Atari made the announcement that they were partnering with PowerA to create peripherals for the Atari VCS leading up to its launch. Medium had the complete exclusive today in which they detailed the two different controllers being made for the console. The first being the classic joystick we all love and remember, only this one has been outfitted with extra buttons to activate the system and access the menu, along with a Fire button on the side. Meanwhile, the Modern Controller as its being called will act like pretty much every controller on the market with the additional materials to work with the VCS. You’ll notice the right-trigger button also serves as the Fire button.
While it’s really cool to see this kind of stuff being made ahead of the console’s release, it does seem a bit premature to show off all the features of a licensed controller being made by a third party when no one has even seen what the Atari VCS can even do. To date, only a handful of people have even seen the physical product outside of Atari staff, and all of them are keeping quiet about what they saw and what they believe it can and cannot do. Don’t get us wrong, we love seeing what’s coming for the console, and hope to see more at E3. But from a public standpoint, it seems like the company should be a little more focused on showing us the console and the games coming to it rather than showing off a new set of controllers.
