'Killing Eve' S02, Ep05: The Oddest Couple of All Reunites to "Smell Ya Later" (SPOILER REVIEW)

A few of the strings holding the human puppets in season 2 of Killing Eve were a little more apparent in "Smell Ya Later", the latest episode to air on AMC and BBC America.

Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) and her MI6 team, Operation Mandalay, are getting nowhere fast in their attempt to interrogate the Ghost (Jung Sun den Hollander), who is the polar opposite of Villanelle (Jodie Comer) as a killer.

The Ghost is clean, efficient, and almost gentle in her kills. Villanelle is all about the flair, brutality, and message of her assignments.

Still, no-one appears capable of getting the Ghost to crack, so Eve comes up with a brilliant plan- getting Villanelle to get the answers that the Ghost won't volunteer about her killing of a very wealthy man.

Why would the Ghost crack under pressure from Villanelle? Well, turns out she's terrified of the Russian assassin. she even has a dread-inducing nick-name for her: "The Demon with No Face".

This tips off a whole new level of irrational actions from Eve, as she hatches a preposterous scheme to get Villanelle on board with the interrogation. I'll save that for the spoilers.

What's great in "Smell Ya Later"? Comer and Oh, of course. The smug, wry indifference of Fiona Shaw's Carolyn. The car wash kill. Villanelle's fascination with street performers. The expert on Sociopaths bit. The room-service bit.  Nico's (Owen McDonnell) inadvisable moment of bravery. The shipping container. Villanelle's freaking amazing wardrobe. And a bunch of stuff that I'll save for the spoilers.

Yeah, let's get to those spoilers.

Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) and Carolyn are definitely playing a deadly game, and you can clearly see them collaborating to set the events of this episode in motion.

What events, you ask? They want to bring Villanelle on to the team, which seems like a disaster in the making.

Eve's master plan to set up a hit on herself, with Villanelle as the contractor, leads to one of the most intensely terrifying and amusing reunions I have ever had to sit through. There's something electric about Villanelle and Eve together- neither is sorry for hurting the other, and they seem thrilled to be together.

That leads the pair to a storage container in the middle of the woods with the Ghost restrained within it – seems legit, right? Eve can't get the Ghost to budge, but Villanelle does. We don't see how, but the Ghost calls Eve a monster for allowing the encounter to occur.

Keep in mind, she's wearing the veil and funeral clothes she wore to kill Eve in the whole time.

Nico, off to Oxford to chaperone a spelling bee, ends up face to face with Villanelle. She's clearly playing with him, he threatens her, she tells him everything. And no, I don't think she felt like she was in danger at all. And then Villanelle drops the biggest bomb of all:

She's working with Eve now.

I'm still kind of stunned. This was some seriously fantastic television, and seeing Eve and Villanelle work together was amazing. But where can the show go now? Can Villanelle be trusted, even a little? Is she going to put up with competition from Nico? It's all very tense.

Sunday, May 12th AMC and BBC America will be rolling out the red carpet for 'I hope you like Missionary!" What that means kind of scares me. Is it sex? Are they eating missionaries? I guess we'll find out soon enough on the next episode of Killing Eve!
