Britain's South Coast Contains Two Rival Comics Events This Weekend

You wait for a comic book event on the south coast of Britain and two come along at once, and less than an hour and a half on the slow train between them. In Brighton today and tomorrow you have Graphic Art Brighton and on tomorrow and Sunday in Portsmouth you have the Portsmouth Comic Con.

Graphic Brighton 2019: Making Comics Work is free, taking place at University of Brighton City Campus. This year's event is looking at educational comics, where comics are used to inform readers about topics they'd like to know more about, covering all sort of themes including historical biography, science, medicinal practices, architecture, university research and risk management in business.

Guests include cartoonists and comic creators Ian Williams, Chris Geary, Ottilie Hainsworth, Richy K Chandler, Warren Pleece, Alison Sampson, Owen Pomery, Muna Al-Jawad, Ben Dickson, Daniel Locke and comics laureate Hannah Berry. George Hardie, and architects Jacquelyn Cohen and Joe Robson (AVR London), will also be coming along to talk about their practice and use of comics in their work. The two day event , which will take place in the University's North Gallery, is a mixture of talks, panel discussions and workshops. And tomorrow accompanied by the annual Children's Parade through the town.

While the Portsmouth Guildhall has their Portsmouth Comic Con 2019 with a new 15mx40m glass-sided super-structure has been added outside in Guildhall Square to help accommodate thousands of extra visitors and guests including Roy Thomas, Steve Englehart, Tommy Lee Edwards and Liam Sharp, and a Stan Lee and Alex Ross exhibition. I wil be popping down to this on Sunday, hoping to catch up with Joe Illidge and Scott Dunbier while I'm there… my Saturday will be all Free Comic Book Day in London with the kids. Something they are also competing with, including Forbidden Planet and Gosh Comics' bigtime comics signings, sjetchings and events.

So which would you choose?
